Today's announcement of more than $9 million in Commonwealth funding for council roads and infrastructure is a much-needed boost for Mayo, according to local Federal MP Rebekha Sharkie.

"Mayo had a significant backlog of infrastructure needs before I became the Federal Member. Since being elected I have spent a considerable amount of time advocating on behalf of our councils for more funding for local roads, including the restoration of Supplementary Road Funding, so these extra allocations are extremely welcome," Rebekha said.

“Given the economic hits our community has taken with the bushfires and now the COVID-19 restrictions, putting money into shovel-ready projects in our local communities with an emphasis on local material procurement will boost employment and business confidence.

"Some of Mayo's councils are still working through which projects they will be delivering with their allocated funding before the 1 July 2021 deadline.

"However, I am advised that Yankalilla Council plans to upgrade Hay Flat Road at Yankalilla, a popular unsealed tourist route to Ingalalla Falls, and Victor Harbor Council plans to widen the shoulders of Waitpinga Road between Mill Road and Range Road.

"All of these projects will improve road safety in our community and inject money into our local economy."

The new Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program provides $500 million across Australia for local government to deliver priority projects.

Allocations were calculated in a similar way to the Roads to Recovery Program and the road component of the Financial Assistance Grants, taking into consideration road length and population and the recommendations of Local Government Grants Commissions.

Funding provided to councils in Mayo included:

  • Adelaide Hills Council $781,415
  • Alexandrina Council $685,920
  • Kangaroo Island Council $487,807
  • City of Mitcham $847,802
  • District Council of Mount Barker $676,351
  • City of Onkaparinga $2,463,485
  • City of Victor Harbor $355,740
  • District Council of Yankalilla $245,369

The Commonwealth also announced that it would bring forward $1.3 billion in Financial Assistance Grant payments for councils for 2020/2021.
