Members of the Young Mayo group on the South Coast will be getting their hands dirty to make a difference to the beach environments on the Fleurieu Peninsula in August.

The group is hosting Clean Up The Bay on Sunday, August 20, and is inviting the young people of the region to join them at Horseshoe Bay between 10am and 12pm.

Young Mayo spokesperson Olivia Scott said members wanted to do something practical to improve community reserves and help adjoining fragile habitats.

“We noticed after summer, when a large number of tourists had visited our area, that our beaches were really struggling with large amounts of litter,” the Year 12 student from Goolwa said.

“I know on Goolwa beach you would find dirty nappies and broken bottles.

“Nature puts up a strong façade but really it is delicate and fragile.

“Cigarette butts are the worst.

“Recently I heard someone say the beach is nature’s ashtray and it broke my heart a little bit.”

Fellow Young Mayo member Isabella Cook from Hindmarsh Island said people who used local beaches needed to remember that these environments were habitat for wildlife.

“Our beaches are home to the endangered species the hooded plovers.

“When these environments become covered in rubbish we neglect nature.”

Young Mayo started late last year as an avenue for youth in the electorate to work with Rebekha and share ideas for the area and give feedback on political issues.
