I’m Rebekha Sharkie, your independent voice for Mayo.

I’ve lived here for decades – it’s where I raised my children and where my husband runs a small construction business. When I speak in Canberra, I speak as your neighbour.

I work every day to make sure Mayo’s voice is heard on the issues that matter most to our community.

The future of the Woodside Barracks

The Woodside Barracks in the Adelaide Hills is important to our community – economically, environmentally and historically. Next year would have marked its 100th anniversary.

We now know the Government is selling off the Barracks, as part of the Defence divestment of real estate across the country.

So, where to from here? I expect the sale of the Barracks could take some years. In the meantime, I’m working hard to ensure the facilities being used by community groups will remain available.

I continue to meet with stakeholders about the future of this site and will keep up my advocacy for its future as a community asset. I do not want to see Woodside Barracks used for housing, and according to our residents’ survey, neither do locals.

I remain hopeful of an outcome which will see the site and its facilities enjoyed by the community.

Fuel prices are biti

Fuel prices are biting hard – and I’ve been pushing to scrap the fuel excise. The Government’s three-month plan is a step forward with fuel excise halved and the Heavy User Vehicle Charge cut to zero – welcome relief in communities like Mayo, where driving isn’t optional.
Now the Government must make sure servos pass the ⛽savings on.
Relief promised must be relief delivered!

It’s showtime! The Mount Barker District Show is one of the best community events in our region. From animals to face painting , market stalls, magnificent art and craft - what a great day! (despite the weather) A huge thank you to the team of volunteers who work tirelessly to bring this event together for the community.
