Rebekha Sharkie delivers first speech

Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie has delivered her first speech, outlining the issues that face the electorate of Mayo, South Australia, and the country.

Speaking in front of family, friends and other members of Parliament, Ms Sharkie spoke about her passions including protection for the agricultural industry, reducing youth unemployment and ensuring South Australia’s future.

Ms Sharkie implored the Parliament to move away from short term fixes and instead to look towards sensible, informed and evidenced based planning.

“We must, as representatives of our nation, move away from language that is divisive and hurtful. Lifters and Leaners; the Taxed and Not Taxed. This language does not bring us together, it divides us. It is not helpful, true or necessary."

Ms Sharkie highlighted challenges facing her home state of South Australia, saying “My beloved South Australia is at a precipice. I am an avid student of our history and I do not believe there has been a more challenging time for South Australia since the Great Depression.”

Despite this, Ms Sharkie was quick to illustrate the exciting times the electorate of Mayo and South Australia would face in the coming years. She highlighted that the growing global population would provide enormous opportunity, particularly given the diverse agricultural, horticultural and viticultural industries within the electorate.

Speaking directly to her constituents, Ms Sharkie thanked them for their overwhelming support.

“There is no greater honour than to represent you in our Nation’s capital. I will do everything I can to keep democracy as close as possible to our communities. My focus, my energy, my heart will be dedicated to make Mayo matter.”
Ms Sharkie was thrilled to have delivered her first speech.

“I am so excited to have had the privilege to deliver my first speech, and I’m now looking forward to getting on with the job and ensuring that Mayo is properly represented in the parliament.”
