I’m Rebekha Sharkie, your independent voice for Mayo.

I’ve lived here for decades – it’s where I raised my children and where my husband runs a small construction business. When I speak in Canberra, I speak as your neighbour.

I work every day to make sure Mayo’s voice is heard on the issues that matter most to our community.

Woodside Barracks Update

More than 200 people attended a recent community information session on the future of the Woodside Barracks, showing just how important this site is to our community.

The meeting gave locals the opportunity to hear directly from the Department of Defence and ask questions following the decision to sell the Barracks as part of the national Defence Estate divestment process.

While many people remain disappointed by the decision to sell the site, the focus is now shifting to what happens next and ensuring our community has a strong voice in shaping that future.

I am supporting the formation of a community working group to help identify future uses for the Barracks and ensure local knowledge and ideas are part of the process.

Community feedback to date has been clear. People want to see outcomes that benefit the wider community, conserve the environmental values of the site and respect its long connection with Woodside and the Adelaide Hills.

This is an opportunity to create something special that future generations can enjoy and benefit from.

It’s concerning that a case of H5 bird flu has been detected in a giant petrel found at Knights Beach near Port Elliot.
I asked a question in Parliament today about bird flu and have subsequently been briefed by the Agriculture Minister’s office. I understand this discovery may be concerning for some people, but I am assured the Federal and State Governments, as well as agricultural industries and environmental groups have been preparing for an outbreak for some years.
There’s plenty of information at birdflu.gov.au
The message for the public if you see a dead or injured bird is – avoid, record, report.

Our wine industry is facing one of the most significant challenges in its history, and the Government needs to listen. 🍇
This industry sustains regional communities, drives tourism, supports exports and showcases Australia to the world.
Mayo is home to some of our most recognised wine regions - Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Currency Creek, where wine tourism is critical. From cellar doors, to freight companies, to grape growers – they’re all feeling the financial and emotional pressure.
