Media diversity vital for regions

Federal Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie says she is cautious about proposed media reforms and that her NXT Senate colleagues will need to examine the Government's recent Media Reform Bill carefully.

The NXT MP told Federal Parliament on November 30 that Mayo was well served by truly local media.

"I am cautious about proposed media reforms and my NXT Senate colleagues will need to examine the recent Media Reform Bill carefully," she said.

"An engaged nation is a great nation.

"We should not allow any legislation to lessen the media diversity in this country.

"We should make sure that we look out for our local radio stations, our local newspapers, and our local television broadcasters.

"Everyone in regional Australia would join me in stating how important they are to local communities."
