Federal Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie has put Centre Alliance’s opposition to Labor's dividend imputation policy on the record.

Speaking in Federal Parliament today, Rebekha said many retirees and soon-to-be retirees had structured their financial affairs for many years around the current dividend imputation arrangements.

“I want to put on the record that I and my Centre Alliance Senate colleagues will not support any legislation that will leave retirees worse off,” Rebekha said.

“We also take a dim view of supporting any legislation that is retrospective.

“People make long-term decisions in good faith based on the laws of the day.”

Rebekha said the policy if it ever became law, could also have consequences for tourism in regional Australia.

“Self-funded retirees are contributing significantly to regional tourism in this country,” she said.

“They are known as the grey nomads. They are spending their money in our regional communities, and I thank them wholeheartedly for that.”
