Local community groups can now apply for grants of up to $20,000 under the Stronger Communities Programme, being coordinated by Federal Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie MP.

A total of $150,000 will be distributed across the electorate to clubs, local governments and not-for-profits for projects that will improve the local community.

Eligible groups can apply for grants between $2,500 and $20,000 from the Federal Government and are required to match the project funds with their own finances or in-kind support.

Ms Sharkie invited community groups to lodge expressions of interest to her office by August 11.

“This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in our region and help communities with projects such as upgrading sports equipment, refurbishing clubrooms or building shade structures down at the local park,” she said.

“I have established a community consultation committee to identify priority projects and ensure the best possible outcomes for our community.”

Ms Sharkie said the committee would ensure funds were distributed equitably across the Mayo electorate.

“I want to use local knowledge to identify the projects that will bring real social benefits to our communities.

“We will have an independent, locally-based consultation committee assess all expressions of interest and draw up a shortlist. Those organisations that make the shortlist will be invited to formally apply to the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.”

The Department is expected to announce the successful projects in November. This is the third round of the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme, which has already funded over 3,300 community-based projects across Australia.

Previously approved projects include fit-outs for men’s sheds, building a bike path, purchasing equipment for sports groups and upgrades to community halls.
