Federal Government must look local first

NXT has secured the most significant changes to the way the Federal Government buys goods and services.

After lengthy negotiations at the end of 2016, the Government agreed to use Australian standard certified products and to take into account ethical employment practices, occupational health and safety and environmental impacts of where the goods are sourced.

Before these rules came into effect, the Federal Government had been spending $59 billion on goods and services without having to consider compliance with Australian standards, employment and environmental regulations.

Nick Xenophon and Rebekha also participated in a Joint Select Committee which recommended Australia not enter into any future trade commitments that undermine the Federal Government’s ability to support Australian businesses.
