I’m Rebekha Sharkie, your independent voice for Mayo.

I’ve lived here for decades – it’s where I raised my children and where my husband runs a small construction business. When I speak in Canberra, I speak as your neighbour.

I work every day to make sure Mayo’s voice is heard on the issues that matter most to our community.

Woodside Barracks Update

More than 200 people attended a recent community information session on the future of the Woodside Barracks, showing just how important this site is to our community.

The meeting gave locals the opportunity to hear directly from the Department of Defence and ask questions following the decision to sell the Barracks as part of the national Defence Estate divestment process.

While many people remain disappointed by the decision to sell the site, the focus is now shifting to what happens next and ensuring our community has a strong voice in shaping that future.

I am supporting the formation of a community working group to help identify future uses for the Barracks and ensure local knowledge and ideas are part of the process.

Community feedback to date has been clear. People want to see outcomes that benefit the wider community, conserve the environmental values of the site and respect its long connection with Woodside and the Adelaide Hills.

This is an opportunity to create something special that future generations can enjoy and benefit from.

A big crowd last night for the latest community information session about the future of the Woodside Barracks. The turnout reflects the importance of this site to our community.
It was great to have Assistant Minister for Defence the Hon. Peter Khalil
there to answer questions about the sale.
A local community working group is already underway putting together a proposal for future use.
While I remain disappointed about the decision to sell the barracks, this may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a legacy for future generations to enjoy.
