I’m Rebekha Sharkie, your independent voice for Mayo.

I’ve lived here for decades – it’s where I raised my children and where my husband runs a small construction business. When I speak in Canberra, I speak as your neighbour.

I work every day to make sure Mayo’s voice is heard on the issues that matter most to our community.

South Australia’s harmful algal bloom

This ongoing environmental crisis is hurting SA. Since being first identified in March, the bloom has continued through the winter and as temperatures heat up, I am concerned about the ongoing effects.

We’ve seen a devastating impact on marine life. The health of some residents has been adversely affected. Local businesses are feeling the financial consequences. Many coastal communities are doing it tough.

I welcome the more than $100 million in financial support from the State and Federal Governments for the environment, science, industry, business and local communities.

I want to remind everyone, that there are many areas of our coast that remain unaffected.  As the bloom continues, I encourage people to head to our coastal towns and support them as much as possible.

This is community and connection at its finest. Today I caught up with long-time volunteers Lois, Claire and Jill at the Stirling branch of Meals on Wheels SA. This trio of lovely ladies is part of a team of more than 100 volunteers who cook and deliver as many as 250 fresh meals a week across the Adelaide Hills, from Norton Summit to Stirling to Cherry Gardens. This local service has been running for 57 years and makes such a difference to so many people. ... See MoreSee Less

“Light will win

“Light will win – a gathering of unity and remembrance”.

This is the theme for today’s National Day of Mourning for the 15 innocent victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.
On behalf of my Mayo community, deepest sympathies to the families, friends and loved ones of the victims.
What should have been a celebration of light, became one of Australia’s darkest days.
My condolences also to Australia’s Jewish Community.
As a symbol of remembrance, mourning and solidarity, we’re encouraged to leave a candle at the doorstep or window.
At 7.01pm AEDT, you may wish to observe a minute of silence.
Our Australian Jewish community is also asking that we all undertake a Mitzvah – and act of kindness, compassion and moral responsibility to honour the 15 lives lost.

Let today be one of kindness, unity and remembrance.
